Girls and math

"The gap between females and males in mathematics does not exist in those countries where both sexes have equal access to learning tools and opportunities': this is what science says a major study published in the latest edition of the prestigious American journal Science. The study was conducted by a team of four Italian economists, Luigi Guiso, European University Institute in Florence, Ferdinando Bridge - University of Chicago, Paola Sapienza - University of Northwestern and Luigi Zingales - School of Business in Chicago. To dispel a myth, then, what has always supported a genetic predisposition of males to excel in the field of mathematics were analyzed, in fact, data on specific tests of more than 276 000 children in 40 countries and it was noticed that in places which does not exist real equality between the sexes (eg, Korea and Turkey) the scores of females are shorter than those of males. Otherwise, the gap is reversed in favor of women in countries such as Iceland, Sweden, Norway and Finland, where there is real equality. A matter of equal opportunities and therefore power: in societies where women are less concerned, there is a clear separation between the sexes in the field of science. It is the composition of genes, and then, but the cultural and social context that limits the affirmation and empowerment of women in an area that traditionally has a "thing" by men.
