Italy is lagging behind the EU countries, only 84esima in the world rankings on gender disparities. This is the result of the study of the World Economic Forum (WEF) the gap between men and women for the year 2007. The "Global Gender Gap Index 'provides a comprehensive framework for the assessment and comparison of gender differences in terms of opportunities. Four areas of inquiry: participation and opportunity, economic culture, political empowerment, health and survival. The paper examines and compares 128 countries, representing 90 percent of the world population. The study is at the top ranks of countries, irrespective of the availability of resources, have their equal distribution between women and men. The first places were won by Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland, followed by New Zealand. The Latvia and Lithuania, 13th and 14th place respectively, showed the most rapid progress, gaining six seven positions respectively in just twelve months. Germany, Spain, Korea, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are still countries that have closed the gap more than gender history. Tunisia, Morocco and Turkey recorded a sharp deterioration rather than in 2006. Italy has slowly slipped from 77th position in 2006 to the current position. "It is hoped - said Saadia Zahidi Head of the Women Leaders Programme - that these findings will generate greater awareness and encourage greater dialogue between the political authorities."
